1888 Steinway upright, in lovelyTiger Oak. |
||
This lovely Victorian Upright was built in 1888. The carvings reflect the tastes of the time and the availability of skilled craftsmen who had recently arrived from Europe at that time. it was made in the Astoria, NY factory where Steinways are still made today. A Sostenuto pedal catches the notes that are held down when it is pressed. All good grands have them. It was almost never added to an upright because of the cost (it is harder to engineer on an upright action). Most Steinway uprights have two pedals only. That reflects Steinway's integrity. Middle pedals on uprights usually actuate a soft bass or a muffler rail for soft practice. Often a middle pedal works nothing at all, just the spring that holds it up. Its primary function is to sell the piano. Price: $9,700. Includes two free tunings. I may be able to include delivery within a reasonable distance of Carlisle, PA I can order a bench or spin-up stool to go with it. *String length is important to the tone of a piano. The best piano sound is arguably a 9 foot concert grand, wiht string length of about 80". Smaller pianos, those which will fit in our homes, compensate for the shorter srings by making them thicker, at a cost to the sound. Generally you can tell the size of a piano by the point at which the bass tone begins to thicken and become false. On a 30" spinet, this is about Middle C. On the concert grand, that lush, lovely tenor tone continues all the way to the lowest note. |
